Registration and Insurance for Personal Trainers in Canada
What personal trainers in Canada need to know about registration, certification and insurance before taking on clients.
By the HirePersonalTrainer editorial team1 min read
Before you take on paying clients in Canada, it's worth knowing what's required and what clients and gyms expect. This guide covers the basics. Always confirm details with the official body, as rules change.
Registration
- Canada has no national licence for personal trainers. Most gyms ask for a recognised certification such as canfitpro's Personal Training Specialist (PTS) or the CSEP Certified Personal Trainer (CSEP-CPT).
- Rules and recognised credentials can differ by province, so check local requirements, especially for allied health work.
Insurance
- Liability insurance is standard for independent trainers, and certifying bodies often offer or point to group policies.
- Some municipalities require a permit for commercial fitness classes in parks.
