Canadians searching for a trainer often weigh two options: a trainer who comes to your home, or one who coaches you by video. Both can work. The right choice depends on your goals, budget, space and how much hands-on coaching you want.
In-home personal training
- Hands-on technique correction and spotting
- The trainer brings equipment or works with what you have
- Usually costs more per session because of travel time
- Availability depends on where you live; city centres like Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary have the most choice
Virtual personal training
- Live video sessions or an app-based programme with check-ins
- Works anywhere in Canada, including smaller towns and during winter
- Often cheaper per week, and you can pick a coach from another city
- Needs some self-motivation and a little space and kit
What to check in Canada
- There is no national licence for personal trainers. Ask which certification they hold.
- Common Canadian certifications include canfitpro's Personal Training Specialist (PTS) and the CSEP Certified Personal Trainer (CSEP-CPT).
- Ask about liability insurance, especially for in-home sessions.
- For virtual coaching, ask how often they review your training and how you'll contact them between sessions.
On HirePersonalTrainer you can filter for in-home or online experts, compare the rates trainers list themselves and enquire free.
